December 5, 2022 – Zina Chernowas- The Salvation Army Illuminate programs and services for Survivors of Human Trafficking

Human Trafficking in Canada is a topic that is gaining more media attention in recent years, but what is it exactly? Modern-day slavery is exploiting a person for financial profit. This can happen in many ways but we see it typically in labour and sex trafficking. Unfortunately, once we start to understand it, we start to see it everywhere. How can we respond as a community without causing further harm? How can we support healing the exploitation equation and help Survivors heal?

At the Salvation Army Illuminate, we operate eight direct services for Survivors of human trafficking and exploitation in Canada. We boldly disrupt the cycles of human trafficking by illuminating public awareness through education, relentless intervention strategies, safe places for Survivors to heal, and establishing networks that build back extraordinary lives for those affected. The goal of our program is to help individuals exit exploitive circumstances, including labour and/or sex trafficking, and pursue healing and recovery.

At Illuminate, we recognize that training is essential to understanding and addressing complex human trafficking dynamics and supporting Survivors; breaking down stigma and barriers in our communities; equipping healthy responses that do no harm and are effective. Leading by the results of our Survivor-led research initiative, Shift, we will share our calls to action that aim to improve services, encourage accommodations, and support Survivors seeking help and recovery, giving them our very best. Through our Spark Program, we offer education, training, and consultation, across BC and Canada, for all service sectors. Our goal is to increase our community capacity and equip healthy responses to play an active role in ending human trafficking.
