June 2023 Meeting
June 5, 2023 Speaker: Suzanne Jay, Asian Women for Equality
It was Nicole Chan’s dream to be a police officer. She was a Constable with the Vancouver Police Department for nine years. She died on on Jan 27, 2019 of apparent suicide during a lengthy process of seeking to hold a senior police officer accountable for sexually assaulting her and coercing her into sex with him over many years. Several other male officers are implicated in taking advantage of the young Asian woman during her career with the VPD. What happened and why is this case important to feminists? What are the next steps in seeking justice for Nicole Chan?
Suzanne Jay is a member of Asian Women for Equality, a feminist collective that works to change societal attitudes towards women, especially women of Asian descent; to advance equality for Asian women; and to create opportunities for Asian women to have meaningful participation and to take leadership roles in civil society.
